Will it ever get any easier?

“Will it ever get any easier?”  This is a quote from one of the best-known pastors in America. He’s an author of 43 books and successful by just about every metric there is. He sat down with his son for coffee and asked him to connect him with a mentor. His son said, “Dad, why do you need a mentor? You’ve helped and coached hundreds of people in your career. Why now?” It was then that he spoke those “telling words.” He said, “I just need to know if life and ministry will ever get easier.”Those words are words of fatigue and possibly pain. Here’s a successful pastor, author, and leader and he’s finding himself on the edge of quitting. Fatigue can do that to you.

When Jesus addressed his followers in Matthew 11:28-30 it was set in the context of the everyday person who worked “daylight hours.” In other words, when the sun came up you go to work and when the sun goes down, you go home. They were tired. On top of this, they were weighed down with all of the external laws and legalism of the Pharisees. Jesus shares words that wash over the people listening and He gave them HOPE. The hope of a better day because of His strength and His strong shoulders. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

“Will it ever get any easier?” You’ve asked the question and so have I. Let that question drive you to the only one who can make it easier. He’s the rest giver, the burden carrier, He’s Jesus.
