When it’s not all good

Here’s the age-old question: “Why does God allow bad things to happen to us occasionally?” For some, it feels like it happens “all the time.” We are especially prone to asking the “why” question when bad things happen in our lives.  I’ll provide the “textbook” answer. It’s because it gives us the freedom to choose, which enables growth and development in almost every aspect of our lives. When we face challenges and overcome them, we change—hopefully for the better.

God gave all of us the gift of making our own choices, which sometimes leads to unfortunate outcomes, affecting both ourselves and others. Like many of you, I’ve discovered that experiencing hardships can grow a profound connection with God. It’s as if we’re compelled to seek peace and strength during challenging times. While God may permit hard and difficult events in our lives, it doesn’t mean that He’s the cause. Sometimes things just happen because of the natural order or actions of others.

The C. S. Lewis Institute reminds me, “Though we can never give a full explanation of evil in this world, we do have God’s response to it. At the end of this age, when Jesus comes again in glory, our God will show Himself to be fully and completely one day.”  Revelation 21:4 “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” The Bible reveals a God Who is worthy of our trust even in the midst of our pain.
