What’s trending?

If you watch the local news regularly, you’ll eventually see a segment called “trending topics” or something similar. It’s fascinating to me how trends change so quickly. One day, the hot topic was the latest pop singing sensation. The next day, it’s something political. Hours later, it’s a crazy recipe of the rich and famous. To say “human beings are fickle” is an understatement. However, those who hold to the unchangeable truths of the Scriptures should be above all that, right? We’re not. We fall into the same trap of looking to the next favorite preacher, the current rage in worship music, and the technology that captivates our attention.

Awareness of our world and the constant changes and trends is not bad. But don’t let it dominate or prioritize your life. Don’t be characterized by following the latest crazes, leanings, and inclinations of the day. I’ve found more than once that you’ll be disappointed. Here’s a passage of Scripture that might bring balance to your thinking today. The Apostle Paul, in addressing the abuses within the church in the city of Corinth, says, “You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything,”—but not everything is beneficial.  Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.” 1 Corinthians 10:23-24.
