Small is the new big

Orange is the new black”. It’s the title of the 7 season TV series that began in 2013. Interesting title. Let me clarify. The ‘orange’ in the title refers to the color of correctional uniforms the female inmates wear. The ‘is the new black’ is a fashion reference, meaning the new hot thing.

60 is the new 40”. Maybe you’ve heard that phrase. Scientists have claimed that ’60 is the new 40′, mostly in response to our aging population and research into changing attitudes on what it means to be ‘old’. Given my age, I like that phrase.

“Small is the New Big.”  That refers to a book written in 2006 by Seth Godin. His premise was simple. Given the age we live and work in, small is your friend.”  Frankly, that “flies in the face” of conventional wisdom. Most today would say, “bigger is better” or “more is necessary.” But not so fast. I’ve found and intuitively, you already know, that “small” is the key to flexibility.  It’s also the key to faster, more efficient, and more effective endeavors.

I’m told Cruise Ships take over a mile to turn around. A small speed boat can do it in a flash. Yes, there’s more stability over a rough ocean in a large ship, but they will always lack the ability to change course quickly.  The gate of salvation in Matthew 7:14 is a small one.  For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
