“Please and thank you”

Here’s a rhetorical question: “Has ‘politeness’ disappeared from the landscape of America?” I mean, just basic courtesy? I was riding with a police officer during his regular shift. Halfway through the shift, a handful of kids saw the police car, and immediately, they started cussing and giving us “hand gestures.” Now, I grew up in a generation where the last thing you would ever consider doing is showing an officer disrespect. Why has courtesy gone away?

Here are some possible scenarios: Life is running at breakneck speed today. Busyness and stressful lifestyles are the norm. This can sometimes result in a lack of focus on manners and polite behavior. How about this? The rise of digital communication has changed the way people interact, leading to a decrease in face-to-face interactions where polite behavior is observed and practiced. It could be a lack of role modeling or increased individualism and self-centeredness.

Friends, It’s essential to remember that politeness and respect are indispensable for growing positive relationships and a healthy society. They help promote a culture of respect and consideration for others.

With that, here’s my top 10 list for bolstering politeness and respect.

1. Saying “please” and “thank you” when requesting or receiving help.

2. Holding the door open for someone behind you.

3. Offering your seat to someone who may need it more, such as the elderly, pregnant women, or individuals with disabilities.

4. Listening actively and attentively when someone is speaking to you.

5. Using respectful language and tone when communicating with others.

6. Respecting personal space and boundaries.

7. Offering compliments and words of appreciation.

8. Apologizing when you make a mistake or unintentionally offend someone.

9. Being punctual and respecting other people’s time.

10. Showing empathy and understanding towards others’ feelings and perspectives.
