Learning something new becomes increasingly challenging as we age. We’ve all heard the saying, “You can’t teach old dogs new tricks.” While I acknowledge its validity to some extent, I’ve come to realize that as we grow older, we have a choice. We can either succumb to the old adage or actively strive to learn, grow, and “evolve” into a better, more capable, or even a different person altogether. I am profoundly grateful for my parents-in-law. Their entire lives were a testament to a lifelong learner’s heart and attitude. Their “easy chairs” were always adorned with books, articles, and magazines that they were currently engrossed in. What an inspiring example they were. My father passed away at the age of 97, and until the very end, he relished engaging anyone in a remarkably diverse range of topics. Mom, also 97, continues learning daily. What a delight to be with her.
So what’s the takeaway from this day’s blog post? Never stop learning. Never stop growing. 2 Peter 3:18 tells us, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Growth is not optional; it’s commanded and lifelong. Colossians 1:9–10
“…that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will… so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord… increasing in the knowledge of God.” Learning fuels obedience; obedience fuels deeper learning. Proverbs 1:5 “Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” Wisdom isn’t static—even the wise keep learning.
