I was listening to the lyrics to a song the other day. The song is titled “I Lose My Ability.” The title sort of bugs me, so I had an attitude before I heard the words. I was thinking, as it relates to being a Christ-follower, it must mean I lose my ability to make decisions. Or I simply become a puppet of sorts. No, that’s not it!
The words say, “When I see Your Face, I lose my ability to be afraid.” The Presence of God changes things. We agree with that “intellectually,” but where the “rubber meets the road” is when we’re facing fear. Fear turns the strong into weaklings. It changes the way we think. It changes what we tolerate. It changes our hopes and dreams.
But being in the presence of Jesus gives courage, smack dab in the middle of fear. Do you want a quick reminder of what that entails? Think back to the Garden of Eden. Adam was hanging with God Himself…walking with Him…talking with Him…dreaming with Him…laughing with Him…playing Pickleball with Him. Ok, I’m guessing on a couple of those ideas, but you get the concept. The practical result of being in God’s presence is joy and the absence of fear. Maybe it’s about time for you and me to “lose our ability.”
Psalm 23:4 – “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.”
Psalm 34:4 – “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”
