Leadership and relationships

Leadership in the corporate world tends to be very sterile. To put it another way, it’s often without emotions. Here’s the premise: “Don’t get wrapped up in relationships when it comes to leadership because decisions have to be made. Sometimes they’re unpopular, people get hurt, and feelings become a factor.”  However, I believe there is a different standard of leadership for those who follow Christ and call themselves Christian. That standard or fresh mindset is seen in John 15:15. Jesus, in one of His last conversations with His disciples, said, “I no longer call you servants because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

Leadership, Jesus style, has to do with relationships. In fact, it just might be all about relationships. Good and meaningful connections. It’s not “networking” that gets things done; it’s people. People you pour into. People whom you love. People with whom you have built bridges of relationship. Think back over the significant things you have accomplished in your life, and you’ll probably see that your significant relationships with others were the mechanism that got it done.
