I was asked to write a book review for Amazon. Since I enjoy reading and the author, it was a “no-brainer.” But, it prompted me to think: “What if I asked a friend to write a review of my life? What would that look like? Would it be skewed because he is a friend? Would the review my friend gives be similar to one a distant acquaintance might give?” These are great questions to ask yourself from time to time. They speak to my behavior backing up my words or visa-versa.
As my children grew up, I would occasionally ask them, “How am I doing as a dad?” I vividly recall the first time I posed this question to my eldest son. His response genuinely surprised me. He asked, “Will I be punished?” I didn’t anticipate such a direct question. I reassured him, “No.” He then expressed his concern, saying, “Dad, you’re away from home many evenings. I don’t see you as much as I’d like.” It was a wake-up call for me. I realized that I needed to make changes to my schedule and spend more time at home. I’ve never regretted that decision or asking my kids how I’m doing.
They didn’t know it but they were essentially writing a review of my life and behavior. Their review held greater significance and importance than any review I could write for Amazon. As Matthew 5:16 reminds us, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” So, let me ask you, “How are YOU doing as a father, mother, or friend?”
