What was your best gift you’ve ever received? I must have “short/long term memory loss.” I can’t remember what I ate for lunch today let alone a gift someone gave me years ago. That being said, I have been blessed with many gifts, many kind acts of love and service directed to me. Allow me to tell you about one.
I’ve played the guitar since I was thirteen. I’ve always enjoyed it. But my guitar I was playing was a pretty cheap one…in every sense of the word cheap. It didn’t cost much. It didn’t sound very good. It was difficult to play because of the poor quality. One Christmas, all my kids pooled their money and bought me an Alvarez guitar…very nice. Easy to play, sounded fantastic (depending on who’s playing it) and it was easy on the fingers. I was speechless. The gift was special because I knew the sacrifice they made and they also knew how much I would appreciate it. It was perfect!
As I tell the story, I couldn’t help but think of how God treats us. Matthew 7:11 says…”If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” That wonderful passage indicates that God is in the business of blessing us with good gifts, even better than an Alverez.
