“Act like a man.” “Man up.” “Get after it.” “Step up.” There have been more than one occasion when I’ve used phrases like those. I enjoy encouraging and challenging men. Most men possess a profound sense of purpose. While this is true for everyone, I’ve found men often need reminders. Putting it another way: We (men) need to know why something should be done. What the intended outcome could be. Lastly, what is the goal that gives meaning? I’ve found something else that is true. “When no one expects much of them, many will drift.” Is that you? You’re not alone. We need to be challenged.
Encouragement alone can unintentionally reinforce stagnation. I love letting men know when they’re doing great. But as important as that is, we all need to be challenged to step up when it’s required. Further, to take responsibility, be a leader with integrity, and act with courage.
1 Corinthians 16:13–14 tells us, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, and be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” I particularly appreciate the phrase “act like men.” It doesn’t diminish women in any way; rather, it clearly outlines the role and responsibilities of godly manhood. Today, both men and women alike, could it be time to step up in fresh ways?
You don’t need the whole plan, just the next obedient step. Make the call. Schedule the meeting. Start the draft. Show up early. Your action and challenge today will break the grip of stagnation.
