Defining moments

Posted in

What would you call a defining moment? Well, for one thing, it is a life-changing event in every sense of the word. They will set the direction and course of your life. You’ll find that you will never be the same. As a matter of fact, you don’t look for more of them. They tend to “just happen.” They are often challenging, maybe fearful. You will have to make a decision, based on new information. They have eternal implications. If you let them, they will lead us to a willingness for self-sacrificing. They make us ask the question – how can this be?

As we approach Christmas, I want to submit that Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds experienced a defining moment that changed their lives forever.  They would…NEVER BE THE SAME, THEIR FUTURE WOULD BE CHANGED, AND THEIR LIFE WOULD BE DIFFERENT. In Luke 1:30-31 this is recorded, “But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.”

Here’s this incredible story – She could have said, NO, I don’t want to do it. I will be laughed at or worse, rejected.  But, this was not just a moving experience.  This was a defining moment. Her response is found in verse 38, “May it be as you have said.”

This Christmas could be a defining moment for you and your family. Embrace it and declare like Mary, “…may it be as you have said.”
