Deadlines. I don’t know about you, but it seems that my life is constantly driven by deadlines. I need to get this done, finish this project, read this book, and all of these things, plus a myriad of other tasks, are all pushed forward by a looming deadline. Now, let’s clarify what a deadline is. It’s a time limit or a finishing date, often used as a cutoff point. But what truly intrigues me is the historical definition of “deadline.” Historically, it referred to a line drawn around a prison beyond which prisoners were at risk of execution. That “feels” like the intense pressure I experience when confronted with a pressing decision or an approaching date where I need to complete something urgently.
The Bible tells me a few things regarding timing and “deadlines.” John 12:36 says, “While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light”. John 9:4 says, “As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.” There seems to be deadlines built into the fabric of life. We’re encouraged to make the most out of the time we have. Even Ecclesiastes reminds us that God is a God of timing, and there is an appointed time for everything (3:1).
So, don’t be afraid or anxious about life’s deadlines. Instead, consider the significance and importance of each task. Focus on one task at a time. Break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. If you miss a deadline, learn from the experience and reflect on what went wrong. Chances are, you won’t face execution; you might just get a “flesh wound.”
