Those of you who fight anxiety on a day to day basis know this simple fact. It can raise it’s ugly head just when you’ve got a handle on it. In fact, you may find yourself dumbfounded…”where did that come from?” “I thought I was past that.” The hard reality is simply this, “there are some who will deal with this insidious nemesis throughout their lives.” I’m one of them. I take medication. I study the Scriptures and memorize key passages on dealing with anxiety. I trust God with my life and my daily schedule, but it still affects me from time to time. So what do I do? Perhaps this will be of help to you as it has helped me.
Dr. Archibald Hart in his book, “The Anxiety Cure” suggests memorizing several phrases along with key biblical passages. They have helped me combat anxiety when it comes.
Here’s the first: “Don’t fight the feelings – they only last a short time.” Another is this: “I feel some anxiety – SO WHAT – Everyone does from time to time.” And one more: “When this is all over, I’ll be glad I stood up and won the battle.”
I actually memorize them. It has made a huge difference for me…along with my “go-to” bible verse: Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
